Customary Measurement

Rem: first name, last initial

1. Each letter on a hospital roof helipad is 2.5 feet wide. What is the width of each letter in inches? (Think: 1 foot = 12 inches)

2. The emergency wing of the hospital is 97 feet in length. What is the length of the wing in yards? (Think: 3 feet = 1 yard)

3. What is the weight of a 40 ounce book in pounds? (Think: 16 ounces = 1 pound (lb.)

4. The daycare center has 16 quarts of milk delivered each day. How many children will the milk serve if each child drinks 1 cup? (Think: 1 quart = 2 pints & 1 pint = 2 cups)

5. How many pints are in 4 gallons? (Think: 2 pints = 1 quart & 4 quarts = 1 gallon)

Answer in complete sentences, tell the operations used to solve.

    1. 12 divided by 2.5 12/1 x 2/5=24/5 5 divided by 24= 4 4/5 Each letter is 4 4/5 inches.

    2. 97 divided by 3 97/1 divided by 3/1 97/1 x 1/3= 97/3 The wing is 97/3 yards long.

    3.40 divided by 16 40/1 x 1/16= 40/16 16 divided by 40=3 8/16= 3 1/2 The book is 3 1/2 pounds.

    4.16 divided by 2 16/1 divided by 1/2= 16/2 2 divided by 16=8 The milk will serve 8 children.

    5.2 x 4=8 There are 8 pints in 4 gallons.
